The Endocannabinoid System and CBD

Estimated Read Time: 2 minutes

Introduction

Today, there is a huge range of CBD hemp oil products available to purchase online in the UK. You can buy CBD oil, CBD vape liquid, CBD capsules, and even CBD chocolates – but it wasn’t always that way. For a long time, there was confusion and misunderstanding about CBD products from Cannabis Sativa (Hemp variety) plants, with many people classing CBD cannabidiol products as ‘controlled substances’, despite the fact that products with a THC content of less than 0.2% are legal in the UK.

What is the Endocannabinoid System?

The endocannabinoid system (ECS), first identified in the late 1980s by Allyn Howlett and William Devane[i], has been described as ‘an important modulatory system in the function of the brain, endocrine and immune tissues… (which) play(s) a very important role in the secretion of hormones related to reproductive functions and response to stress’[ii], highlighting the importance of this system when it comes to our central nervous system and immune system.  The endocannabinoid system (ECS) is present in all animals and has been for millions of years – a fact demonstrated by the presence of cannabinoid receptors (like cb1 receptors in mammals, birds, reptiles and fish[iii]) in a ‘sea squirt’[iv], an invertebrate that evolved over 600 million years ago.

Endocannabinoids are molecules produced naturally by the body to support the endocannabinoid system, and these molecules have a number of striking similarities with cannabinoids – the chemicals found in Cannabis Sativa. In total, there are more than a hundred cannabinoids that can be extracted from different strains of the cannabis plant, each of which has different benefits for overall balance and wellbeing.

What About THC?

All our CBD products have extremely low levels of the psychoactive element tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and are therefore considered safe for human consumption.  The absence of THC (less than 0.2%) is what makes CBD products legal in the UK; Any level of THC above 0.2% becomes a controlled substance under UK law. With our CBD products, the benefits of CBD can be enjoyed without the adverse effect of THC.

Our ability to supply the best CBD products UK wide, with just trace amounts of THC, means that you can buy CBD chocolates, enjoy our range of hemp oil, or use Hempura CBD vape liquids without any problems!
